{"id":2957,"date":"2016-12-23T18:20:56","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T12:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iacoos.gov.kz\/?p=2957"},"modified":"2016-12-23T18:20:56","modified_gmt":"2016-12-23T12:20:56","slug":"en-worlds-first-solar-panel-road-opens-in-normandy-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.iacoos.kz\/en\/2016\/12\/23\/2957","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s first solar panel road opens in Normandy village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/dec\/22\/solar-panel-road-tourouvre-au-perche-normandy\" target=\"_blank\">www.theguardian.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Route in Tourouvre-au-Perche cost \u20ac5m to construct and will be used by about 2,000 motorists a day during two-year test period<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/france\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">France<\/a>\u00a0has opened what it claims to be the world\u2019s first solar panel road, in a Normandy village.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A 1km (0.6-mile) route in the small village of Tourouvre-au-Perche covered with 2,800 sq m of electricity-generating panels, was inaugurated on Thursday by the ecology minister, S\u00e9gol\u00e8ne Royal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It cost \u20ac5m (\u00a34.2m) to construct and will be used by about 2,000 motorists a day during a two-year test period to establish if it can generate enough energy to power street lighting in the village of 3,400 residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2014, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2014\/nov\/05\/worlds-first-solar-cycle-lane-opening-in-the-netherlands\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">solar-powered cycle path<\/a>\u00a0opened in Krommenie in the Netherlands and, despite teething problems, has generated 3,000kWh of energy \u2013 enough to power an average family home for a year. The cost of building the cycle path, however, could have paid for 520,000kWh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Before the solar-powered road \u2013 called\u00a0<a draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wattwaybycolas.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Wattway<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 was opened on the RD5 road, the panels were tested at four car parks across France. The constructor was Colas, part of giant telecoms group Bouygues, and financed by the state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Normandy is not known for its surfeit of sunshine: Caen, the region\u2019s political capital, enjoys just 44 days of strong sunshine a year compared with 170 in Marseilles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Royal has said she would like to see solar panels installed on one in every 1,000km of French highway \u2013 France has a total of 1m km of roads \u2013 but panels laid on flat surfaces have been found to be less efficient than those installed on sloping areas such as roofs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Critics say it is not a cost-effective use of public money. Marc Jedliczka, vice-president of Network for Energetic Transition (CLER) told\u00a0<a draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/planete\/article\/2016\/12\/21\/en-normandie-une-route-solaire-au-banc-d-essai_5052352_3244.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Le Monde<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s without doubt a technical advance, but in order to develop renewables there are other priorities than a gadget of which we are more certain that it\u2019s very expensive than the fact it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jean-Louis Bal, president of renewable energy union SER, said: \u201cWe have to look at the cost, the production [of electricity] and its lifespan. For now I don\u2019t have the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Colas said the panels have been covered with a resin containing fine sheets of silicon, making them tough enough to withstand all traffic, including HGVs.
